Last night, Sharon and I had the opportunity to see the movie, “Overcomer,” at the Regal Cinemas here in Ocala. I had not read much about it, other than to hear that it was a movie written and produced by Alex and Stephen Kendrick, the creators of movies like “War Room,” “Fireproof,” and “Facing the Giants.” What I did not expect was that Sharon and I would need a pack of tissues for our eyes and noses before the film was over. In the Bible, Ephesians 4:32 tells us, “Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.” Additionally, in Matthew 23:28, we are told, “In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous, but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.” “Overcomer” is a beautiful story of exactly what is taught in these two passages. Being a Christian doesn’t mean being a perfect, better than everyone else, pompous, elite jerk. Being a Christian is about showing the love that God showed us through Jesus on the cross to everyone around us. It is about admitting our own faults, forgiving those who have wronged us, and not just saying the right things, but doing them. My prayer, after seeing “Overcomer” last night, is that I would be forgiving and loving toward those around me, an example of how God loves all of us. I pray that I, and everyone who identifies as a Christian, would be able to be a tender, forgiving, loving vessel through which people would see and experience God’s love for all of us.
